Miles Down the Road

I haven't written about anything running-related in a long while - really since my half marathon.

Well, that's because there hasn't been much update on that front at all. I have run off and on and increased my 5K speed a tad, but that's about it.

Why the update now, you say?

The point of this is to clue you into two pieces of news.

First, Ty caught the running bug.
He's swift as anything and kicks my butt in the speed department. He broke a 23-minute 5K within weeks of running. I'm feeding him as much as I can to compensate for the calories. He has agreed to eat what I put in front of him so he can be properly fueled. For what, you ask? For our half marathon, of course! I am excited to say that we'll be running a half together in November. I loved having my SIL run alongside me in February, and it will be so fun to be working toward this goal with Ty. My goals for this race are threefold: don't puke the night prior to race day, pursue a common goal with my husband, and break two hours. Should be reasonable, right?

Secondly, I am signed up for my first marathon! Lord willing, I will attempt the 26.2 right after Christmas. I mentioned previously that Mollie and I had plans up our sleeves. The half and full fall perfectly in sync on my training plan. My goals for this race have nothing whatsoever to do with time. They are purely emotional/psychological. In an attempt to refrain my my single-focus tendencies (read: obsessive nature, especially regarding piano), I have given myself a non-piano goal. I hope it will keep me healthy and active as well as provide a change of scenery and stress release from the graduate school busyness. I gave Tyler my word that I would let him call the shots on this one; if at any time he senses I am overworked, overcommitted, unhealthy, or plain worn out, I will bail. It is not my life goal to become a runner; I hope to be an accomplished pianist and teacher -- who runs for fitness and fun. All that to say, my piano priorities will, time and time again, trump my fitness goals. While I have every intention of fulfilling my goal, I found Ty's concerns endearing.

So that's that.
Running stinks right now, but I am excited to love it again. I can't wait until Brooklyn is old enough to take running!

  1. Yay for all of this! I always knew he was a runner . . . I could see it in him when he was younger. May you both find pleasure in the task!

Thank you for all the sweet gifts yesterday! The hugs were the sweetest. =) It's good to be home.
