Shotgun Sights

We've been driving! I love road tripping it. This is most definitely my preferred mode of travel. Every city kid should take time to watch the terrain change and buildings fade to farmland. Traveling by car makes me feel so patriotic. I love that we're all Americans and yet grow up in such diverse settings. I love the highway.

Our Sixteen-Week Pup!


Brooklyn had her sixteen-week vet appointment yesterday. She is now fully vaccinated and at the end of her socialization period. To top off the latter, we thought we'd take her on a seventeen-hour road trip. That happens tomorrow. The good news is that she is now dog-park-ready! I have located many along our route.

Did I mention she's thirty-one pounds and growing by the minute? Every morning when I take her out of her crate, I swear she looks an inch taller. We are honestly concerned she may outgrow the backseat of our little civic before we turn around to make the drive home.

Of course, she needed a few things "for the road."

Here's her new Wubba. Poor foxy Wubba isn't really suitable to take into other people's homes anymore. She hasn't fallen in love with this canvas one quite as quickly, but I think she'll come around.

Brooklyn also finished her home training course this week. In addition to building on her other skills, she has begun learning figure-eight walking and "place." Now it's up to us to stay consistent. She is enrolled in a group class in May, and that will reinforce everything she's learned, but in a high-distraction environment.

Graced

Tonight I accompanied an elementary chorus for the school spring concert.

Not just any elementary chorus. My chorus.
The kids I spent four months with in the fall.

They're not mine anymore, but I am incredibly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with them again. The smiles, hugs, cheers, and numerous bouquets made feel like a complete celebrity - all over again! If I had been wearing socks, they would have been rocked all the way to Laos and back. Believe me; I know firsthand that's a long way.

When I'm there, I can almost see myself plunging full force back into that world. A part of me truly experiences joy from the laughter and energy of the students. I think the lesson there is to know that I can be all there if the LORD leads me so. Through internship, I gleaned life lessons among myriad musical and teaching skills.

And yet, a part of me knows that chapter is closed for now - hopefully not forever. I feel as strong a tug as ever to continue pursuing piano, and this simply cannot be done while teaching full-time. I continue to work with my piano students, and I love the one-on-one instructional time and relational aspect of the craft. I love to learn, and so I love to share that through teaching.

I don't know yet what the next chapter looks like, but I don't want to take this one for granted. For now I am soaking in every moment with my husband, every outing with our pup, and lots of time with our phenomenal families. And still I've been able to enjoy my solitary mornings at the piano and busy afternoons with students. (Oh, and did I mention I'm planning my bestie's June wedding?)
Life is good, and I am beyond blessed.

Tonight was reminiscent of four wonderful, challenging, formative months of my life and the fact that my heart connects deeply with the teaching field. But I am happy to say that I don't wish it all back. For once, I am wishing to be here. Now. And I don't want to turn the page until it is time.  It's so easy to always look for something better. While I carry dreams and ambitions on my heart, I don't want to forget to be present in each moment here and now, because each breath is a gift. A grace. A love note straight from Heaven.

What Makes a Good Day?

Hello, friends.

Here it is Friday, yet again.

Ever have those weeks that start great but end less than wonderful?
You survive the uphill climb Monday and Tuesday, arrive on top on hump day, and then take a fast downhill plummet Thursday and Friday.

No? I guess it's just me then.

When I think of each day this week, a single word instantly comes to mind, summing up my feelings toward that day.

Good.

OR

Bad.

I view my days in absolutes.

In my economy, the the goodness of a day is rated on a scale of productivity.

If I accomplish, achieve, succeed, progress, or check all my items off the list, it has been a good day.

If more than one or two of my goals is unmet, I quickly label my day negatively.

This has been an unhealthy pattern in my life for many years. Having experienced the bondage and guilt that ensue from this mode of operation, I have made a significant effort to balance my lifestyle. I preach the Gospel to myself and surround myself with friends who remind me that there is nothing I can do to make God love me any more or any less.

I don't need to achieve in order to receive acceptance, because my works were never the crux of the matter. When God the Father looks upon me, He sees only the perfect life Christ lived. The Great Judge was satisfied when Jesus Christ took the punishment for my wrongs (and my continued efforts to do right in my own strength!). Not only that, but the Judge adopted me and bid me call him Father.

I am declared perfect by the One who has all authority.
I am loved by a Father as if I have been guiltless from my first breath.

Yet still my soul is downcast when I fail. Failure may seem a strong word to you, but that is the weightiness of what I experience some days when I come up short on my practice hours, experience relational tension, eat poorly, or lose my constant housekeeping battle.

You see, I am realizing (and re-realizing) that it is not just my days I label, but myself.
My entire identity so easily intertwines itself with my goals. While it is sick, I must admit I love feeling like a one-man assembly line. Give me a challenge. I'll meet it.

Irony of ironies. In an effort to truly find my worth, I have dehumanized myself.

Beep boop.

This is why we must preach the Gospel to ourselves daily. Hourly. Moment-by-moment. My heart idols of pride and acceptance and control will find a way to rear their ugly heads in any and every situation possible.

Just as the solution is not found in perfect days, neither will it be found if I stop practicing, avoid relationships, ignore my health, or let the dishes pile up. These are all good things. It is when I let them become ultimate, defining things that my life is out of balance. It is so much easier to be extreme than to find a happy medium. So much easier to do the maximum or the minimum. It is the simplicity that proves far more challenging than the complex.

We can seek to uncover our heart idols by asking questions like, "What am I most afraid of?" or "What is the one thing I don't think I can live without?" Things that make us angry are often deeply rooted in heart idols, as well.

So now that we all feel terrible about ourselves, what do we do?
If you're like me, you simply want a checklist, a rubric to make certain you have all your bases covered, all your ducks in a row. Beat those idols into the ground. That'll show them.

And of course all that would be counterproductive.

Paul tells us, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9, NIV)

Saved. Continually. Daily. From my wrongs. From my "rights."

My legal status has been and will always remain one of innocence in the Judge's eyes. My salvation is sure and secure. But my heart needs reminded of that which will always remain true: I am loved apart from my works. It's never been about me. It never will be.

I want to take my cue from Paul, who considered nothing as valuable as this Truth and continued to press forward in the face of setbacks.
"But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ - the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ - yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:7-14, emphasis mine)

I am so thankful this old Truth continues to resonate!

"Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23, emphasis mine)

Tyler Thursday

Every Thursday could easily be brag day about my husband. But today is especially so, because it's his birthday.

Birthdays are big deal where I come from.

They usually last two weeks - minimum - and involve multiple celebrations.

Ty has never been one to make a big deal out of himself, so I'm going to do it for him.

Here are twenty-four reasons my husband is just perfect for me. Can't wait until you're fifty, Ty! Then I can say nearly half of what I want.

1. He loves Jesus. More than he loves me.

2. He loves me second. Nobody else is close for the tie.

3. He understands the value of our extended family. Then again, our families are rockin'.

4. He is always willing to listen, no matter what craziness comes out of my mouth. No idea is too ridiculous to him. And he doesn't laugh at me.

5. But he certainly makes me laugh! Ty's sense of humor is one of my favorite things about him. He can always make me laugh, even when I'm low or in super-productive mode.

6. He supports me in all my endeavors. He is always there to encourage me and cheer me on. This is especially the case in my musical studies. He goes out of his way to show me he cares about my passion.

7. He is a patient man. If you know anything about our dating story, you know this to be true. It remains so, and I am increasingly grateful! He always trusts the payoff will be worth the wait.

8. He loves his sisters. My mom always told me that how a man treats his sisters is how he will treat his wife. I listened, Mom. My Ty loves and looks out for his sisters always.

9. He tells me he loves me, every day. I may be covered in sweat or sick in bed.
No matter - he says so just the same.

10. He is flexible. Chances are, if I ask him to help me with something or change his plan for the day, he will do it.

11. He eats whatever I make. Some days are better than others, for sure. He always blesses the food and thanks God for me.

12. He chooses not to complain. He gently reminds me that sometimes my version of ''stating the facts'' is a bit whiney. He rarely darkens his circumstances by his descriptions.

13. He is excited about our dog. This may sound silly, but it's something that has made me love him even more. I so enjoy watching him play with Brooklyn. I can tell he's head-over-heels for her, and I know he will be a great dad one day.

14. He is a hard-worker. Ty is devoted and dedicated to whatever he sets himself. Talk about intrinsic motivation.

15. He is a servant. If something needs done or someone needs assistance, he is always quick to volunteer his time and efforts.

16. He is full of surprises! I love finding out new tidbits or hearing his spin on an old story. Invariably, I learn new things about him all the time!

17. He is loyal. He loves to follow his favorite bands from high school, purchase the soap Mamacita always bought, and reconnect with old friends. He is most loyal to his family.

18. He is level-headed. I tend to be hot-tempered. At least one of us thinks before speaking his mind.

19. He is an honorable man, above repute. A true gentleman.

20. He thinks the best of others. This is sometimes astounding to me, and then so encouraging! What a relief to let go of speculation and the anxiety which can accompany it.

21. If I'm in need of ice cream or dark chocolate, he will magically make my wishes come true.

22. He helps me escape the box. I mean the one in which I so often try to live and force everything else to follow suit. He shows me that life is wonderful and beautiful even when the daily to-do list isn't accomplished or the budget is off by five dollars.

23. He is a learner. I love that he's always talking to me about something new he heard or a new skill he learned. Whenever he is interested in something, he sure does his research. I guess we are alike in this way. (Between the two of us, we know a heck of a lot about dogs now!)

24. He's mine.
