Revelations From Music History

As I was reading my music history textbook this evening, I made an interesting discovery.
In the middle ages, the dissonant tritone was avoided in composition. It came to be known as the diabolus in musica. Literally, "devil in music."

The way I was taught in ear training class to "hear" a tritone is by singing The Simpsons theme song.
Coincidence?

I couldn't help but laugh aloud.

  1. I had heard about certain chords being devil music! There are even religious groups TODAY who think nothing should be played in a minor chord.

(The Simpson's theme song was written by Danny Elfman, formerly of the group, Oingo Boingo. DEFINITELY not a godly group, but much of their music was so fun to listen to in the 80's!)

  2. Well, I certainly can't cast stones at Danny Elfman. After all, he's the one who composed the music for The Corpse Bride - one of my favorite movies and soundtracks of all time - and other favorites!
